Alonso Hints at Retirement After 2026 Season
Fernando Alonso, whose contract with Aston Martin runs until the end of 2026, has openly admitted that the upcoming season could well be his last in Formula 1.The final decision, according to the two-time world champion, will largely depend on the competitiveness of the team’s car and the results they are able to achieve.
Alonso explained that if the 2026 car proves uncompetitive, he is prepared to remain for an additional season in order to conclude his career on a more positive note. However, should Aston Martin succeed in building a truly competitive machine, the Spaniard is considering drawing a line under his career at the end of 2026.
The driver placed particular emphasis on the forthcoming regulatory changes, noting that for him they represent not merely another shift in the rules but his final opportunity to fight once again for podiums, victories, and potentially the world championship. He highlighted that with the arrival of Adrian Newey and other key specialists, Aston Martin’s prospects have significantly improved, providing genuine hope for a successful future.
Alonso further remarked that even if substantial progress is realized only in 2027 or 2028, he wishes to see clear evidence that the team is heading in the right direction. “These are the last regulatory changes of my career, and perhaps my final chance to leave a mark in the history of the sport,” the Spaniard emphasized.
