Overtaking is possible at Zandvoort, but the circuit’s narrow and twisty layout makes passing particularly difficult. As a result, qualifying position remains crucial, with pole position proving especially valuable at the Dutch Grand Prix in recent years. The battle for pole in 2026 was extremely close, with McLaren and Mercedes emerging as the leading contenders while Ferrari remained within striking distance. The tight margins were evident from the opening stages, as the field fought for every thousandth of a second. Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Oliver Bearman, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez were eliminated in Q1, leaving 16 drivers to fight for the top 10 places. The pace increased significantly in Q2, with Lando Norris setting the benchmark at 1:11.628 and moving ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen briefly moved into the top three, while Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli continued to challenge at the front. The decisive battle came in Q3, with rain threatening to arrive before the end of the session. Norris initially set the pace with a 1:11.344 before producing an even faster lap of 1:11.163. Mercedes pushed hard in response. Russell came within 0.102 seconds of Norris, while championship leader Antonelli finished just 0.133 seconds behind the McLaren. Antonelli also made a small mistake on his final attempt, preventing him from challenging Norris for pole.Norris ultimately secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix with his 1:11.163 lap. It is his second consecutive pole after also starting from the front at the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break. George Russell will start alongside Norris on the front row, while Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri will occupy the second row. Ferrari will line up fifth and sixth, with Lewis Hamilton ahead of Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen endured a difficult qualifying session at his home race and will start seventh, ahead of Red Bull teammate Liam Lawson. Gabriel Bortoleto and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10. Norris therefore heads into Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix from the most advantageous position, while Mercedes will look to convert its strong qualifying performance into another major points haul after Russell’s Sprint victory earlier on Saturday.
