F1 May Return to V8 Power
In Formula 1, new hybrid power units with a 50:50 split between electric power and the internal combustion engine have been in use since 2026. However, it has already become clear at the start of the season that the concept is not fully effective, as peak power is available only for short periods and energy deployment is insufficient on long straights.
In April, the FIA, together with teams and power unit manufacturers, will discuss possible regulatory adjustments. Some changes could be introduced as early as the Miami Grand Prix, although the current engines are expected to remain in place for several years.
At the same time, work is underway on the 2031 regulations. One option under consideration is to abandon hybrid systems in favor of carbon-neutral fuels. Among the proposals is a return to V8 engines, with a 2.4-litre turbocharged configuration reportedly emerging as the leading candidate, according to Auto Motor und Sport. This idea has previously been supported by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
