F1 Targets New Engine Era in 2027

Formula 1 teams and championship organizers are aiming to address the shortcomings of the current regulations as quickly as possible and have already reached preliminary agreements regarding changes to the power units for the 2027 season.

The key modification involves moving away from the current 50/50 power distribution between the internal combustion engine and the electrical systems in favour of a more conventional 60/40 balance. This is expected to allow drivers to push harder and rely less on energy-saving strategies.

During an online FIA meeting attended by team representatives, FOM officials, and power unit manufacturers, participants discussed the impact of the latest regulatory adjustments as well as further revisions to the technical regulations.

It was agreed that postponing the reforms until 2028 would be impractical. The proposed changes include increasing the internal combustion engine output by 50 kW through a higher fuel flow rate, while reducing the electrical component from 350 kW to 300 kW. These modifications will also require teams to redesign chassis layouts and enlarge fuel tank capacity.

The FIA confirmed that technical working groups will continue detailed discussions before the final specification of the new power units is officially approved.

In addition, the federation is continuing to implement further safety measures, including improvements to старт procedures, enhanced systems for wet-weather racing conditions, and upgraded light signalling systems, which could be introduced as early as the Canadian Grand Prix.

All regulatory amendments must receive final approval from the World Motor Sport Council.
