Ferrari Boss Reacts to Hamilton's Critique

Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur Addresses Lewis Hamilton's Hungarian Grand Prix Comments

In recent weeks, Lewis Hamilton’s unusually self-critical remarks following the Hungarian Grand Prix have drawn considerable attention from the media and the wider motorsport community. While such candour is uncommon from the seven-time World Champion, the atmosphere within the Scuderia Ferrari team remains calm and focused.

Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur has offered his perspective on the matter, suggesting that Hamilton may have overstated the challenges he faced that weekend a reflection of his deep commitment to performance excellence rather than an indication of any serious internal concern.

“Lewis is incredibly self-demanding. Sometimes he expects too much both from the car and from himself,” said Vasseur. “This is simply part of his personality. I’ve known him a long time, going back to our time together in GP2, and this is not unusual for him.”

Vasseur highlighted that while Hamilton’s post-race comments may have appeared intense in the public eye, his demeanour within the team was composed and constructive. He emphasised that Hamilton had a strong start to his first season with Ferrari, and it is essential to remain level-headed in the face of isolated difficulties such as those encountered in Budapest.

From a technical standpoint, Vasseur explained that the performance concerns raised were relatively marginal. Minor issues such as a slight inconsistency in braking can result in tenths of a second lost, which, in the ultra-competitive context of Formula1 qualifying, can significantly affect outcomes. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton missed out on pole position by just one-tenth of a second.

Despite the high expectations Hamilton places on himself and the machinery, Vasseur confirmed that the team takes his feedback seriously and continues to assess all input with the utmost attention. He also acknowledged the natural adaptation period that accompanies a transition to a new team, noting that Hamilton required several races to fully acclimatise to Ferrari’s environment unlike teammate Carlos Sainz, who has previously experienced multiple team changes throughout his career.

“When Lewis joined us, perhaps we underestimated how much time it would take for everything to fall into place,” Vasseur said. “It took around four to five races for him to feel completely at home, but that process is now well underway.”
