Hollywood Brings Monaco’s 1962 Grand Prix Back to Life

Production has officially begun in Monaco on the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel, scheduled for release in 2027. Set against the backdrop of the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix, the film will explore the early history of the Ocean family, with Danny Ocean’s parents at the centre of a daring heist carried out during the race.Monaco has been transformed to recreate the atmosphere of the early 1960s, with period-inspired decorations and racing cars filling the streets as filming gets underway.Despite the attention to historical detail, the production is not expected to recreate the 1962 Grand Prix with complete accuracy. Several cars spotted on set do not correspond to the era, while some vehicles have been filmed travelling in the opposite direction to that used during the original race.The real 1962 Monaco Grand Prix was won by Bruce McLaren, ahead of Phil Hill and Lorenzo Bandini. Jim Clark started from pole position but retired on lap 55 after suffering clutch problems. Only eight of the 22 drivers who took the start managed to finish the race.Rather than serving as a direct recreation of the historic event, the Grand Prix will provide the setting for the film’s fictional storyline, combining the glamour of 1960s Monaco with the elaborate criminal world of the Ocean family.
