In a key 2026 World Cup qualifying match, Iceland secured a confident 2–0 victory in Baku. The visitors proved calmer and more precise in the most decisive moments of the game.
The scoring was opened by Albert Gudmundsson, who clinically converted his chance in the 20th minute.
The second blow to the hosts came from Sverrir Ingason, who won an aerial duel after a corner in the 39th minute and headed the ball into the net.
Azerbaijan attempted to impose their game, maintained possession, and created pressure from set pieces, yet none of their efforts resulted in a goal. Iceland, on the other hand, capitalized on nearly every opportunity they created and deservedly claimed all three points.
For the Azerbaijani team, it was a clear indication that the remaining matches will require maximum focus and improved finishing.
