Middle East Crisis Costs F1 $200M
The cancellation of the races in Bahrain and Jeddah, amid the escalation of the situation in the Middle East, is expected to have a significant impact on Formula 1 and all participants in the championship. Several options for rescheduling the events were considered; however, none proved sufficiently viable to fully compensate for the loss of these rounds from the calendar.
According to estimates by Guggenheim Partners, the total financial losses for the series could reach approximately $200 million. This figure includes both the hosting fees that will no longer be paid around $55 million from Saudi Arabiaand $52 million from Bahrain as well as lost revenue from broadcast rights and sponsorship obligations.
Further concern arises from Formula 1’s and the teams’ substantial reliance on partners from the region. Any economic difficulties stemming from the current situation may not have an immediate effect but could lead to longer-term consequences for the financial stability and sustainability of the championship.
