Orange Crush:McLaren Lock Out Spa Front Row
McLaren secure front row lockout as Norris claims pole at Spa
The Belgian Grand Prix weekend saw McLaren dominate qualifying, with Lando Norris claiming pole position and Oscar Piastri joining him on the front row — the team’s third front-row lockout of the season and the 69th in its Formula 1 history.
During Friday’s Free Practice and Sprint Qualifying, Oscar Piastri posted the fastest time, emerging as an early favourite. However, it was Max Verstappen who took victory in Saturday’s Sprint Race, overtaking Piastri at the start and maintaining control throughout the race.
For the weekend, Pirelli supplied the C1 (Hard), C3 (Medium), and C4 (Soft) tyre compounds.
In the race, Nico Hülkenberg and Lance Stroll made contact, resulting in front wing damage for Hülkenberg, necessitating a pit stop. The first incident was noted by the stewards without penalty, while the second was reviewed post-session, resulting in a warning.
Lewis Hamilton had his second flying lap in qualifying invalidated for exceeding track limits. He, along with Franco Colapinto, Kimi Antonelli, Fernando Alonso, and Lance Stroll, was eliminated in the first segment of qualifying. Piastri's second attempt remained valid, comfortably advancing him to Q3.
In Q2, Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman, Pierre Gasly, Nico Hülkenberg, and Carlos Sainz failed to progress to the final qualifying session.
In Q3, Lando Norris set the benchmark early with a lap of 1:40.562. Although several drivers improved on their second runs, Norris’s time held as the fastest. Gabriel Bortoleto had his best lap time deleted for a track limits violation.
With this result, Norris earned his fourth pole of the season and the 13th of his Formula 1 career. He will be joined on the front row by teammate Oscar Piastri.
Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen will occupy the second row, while Alex Albon, achieving his best qualifying result of the season, will start alongside George Russell on the third row.
