Portimao Targets F1 Comeback in 2027
Portugal is seriously considering the return of its national Formula 1 Grand Prix. The initiative is receiving strong backing from the country’s Prime Minister,Luis Montenegro, who has already declared the government’s willingness to provide both financial and logistical support to help bring the ambitious project to life. According to him, hosting major international sporting events such as a Formula1 Grand Prix not only boosts the region’s appeal to tourists but also generates a significant economic impact, both directly and indirectly, by attracting global attention and investment to the country.
The leading candidate to host the event once again is the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao a modern venue built in 2008. It previously held the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021, when it was temporarily included in the calendar during the COVID-19 pandemic. On both occasions,Lewis Hamilton claimed victory, remaining the only active Formula 1 driver to have won in Portugal. Beyond Formula 1, the circuit regularly hosts rounds of other prestigious championships, including the World Endurance Championship (WEC),DTM, MotoGP, and TCR Europe further underlining its readiness to stage events of the highest level.
The Portuguese Grand Prix could potentially return to the calendar in 2027. However, securing a place will be no easy task, as competition among nations is increasingly fierce. Countries such as Thailand, South Africa, Argentina,Turkey, and even Rwanda are also expressing interest in hosting a Formula 1 race.
Nevertheless, Portugal’s chances remain viable especially given Formula 1’s stated plans to introduce a rotation system for certain races, allowing events to alternate between different venues in different years. This could pave the way for Portugal to rejoin the calendar and bring back its national Grand Prix after more than a five-year absence.
