Russell Triumphs in Singapore Ahead of Verstappen and Norris
The balance of power in the championship shifted noticeably in the final third of the 2025 season. Although most teams had already switched their focus to preparing for next year, things changed dramatically in autumn: after a dominant streak of five consecutive victories, McLaren lost its edge. Following the summer break, Verstappen returned to winning form with victories in Monza and Baku, while in Singapore the “orange” team struggled though the 13 points they scored were enough to secure the Constructors’ Championship ahead of schedule.
Friday’s sessions were led by Piastri, but on Saturday Verstappen set the pace, and Russell claimed pole position his second of the season. The starting grid promised excitement: Russell and Verstappen on the front row, followed by Piastri, Antonelli, Norris, and Hamilton. The Williams drivers were disqualified after qualifying for exceeding the DRS opening limit but were allowed to start the race.
The heat in Singapore exceeded +31°C, prompting the FIA to require teams to install driver cooling systems for the first time. Russell opted to use one, while Verstappen declined. A brief rain shower before the start slightly dampened the track, but the race began on slicks.
Russell took control from the start, gradually pulling away from Verstappen, while the McLaren drivers were unable to mount a challenge. Pit stops didn’t change the running order the top seven remained the same. Toward the end, Norris closed in on Verstappen but couldn’t find a way past. Hamilton suffered brake issues and, after receiving a time penalty, dropped behind Alonso.
George Russell took the checkered flag his fifth career victory, second of the season, and first in Singapore. Verstappen finished second, while Norris and Piastri’s strong results secured McLaren the Constructors’ title ahead of time. For the second consecutive year, the Singapore Grand Prix featured no retirements or safety car periods. Next up: the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
