V8 Engines Could Return to F1

Mohammed Ben Sulayem has revealed that V8 engines could return to Formula One as early as the 2030 season. According to Ben Sulayem, the FIA aims to simplify the next generation of power units by retaining a limited hybrid component while eliminating highly complex technologies such as the MGU-H system.

He stressed that V8 engines are lighter, less complicated, and deliver the iconic sound long associated with Formula 1. Ben Sulayem also argued that V8 technology remains highly relevant to the automotive industry, noting that major manufacturers including Ferrari, Mercedes, Audi, and Cadillac continue to produce road cars powered by V8 engines.

While several manufacturers are currently resistant to the proposal, the FIA is expected to gain the authority from 2031 onward to implement such regulation changes without requiring unanimous approval from engine suppliers potentially paving the way for a dramatic shift in Formula 1’s engine philosophy.
