The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix turned into one of the most unusual races of the season. After the event was relocated due to the regional conflict, organisers found an unexpected solution: staging the race in Malaysia at the legendary Sepang International Circuit, which last hosted Formula 1 in 2017.The weekend began with high tyre degradation on Sepang’s old and abrasive surface. Max Verstappen secured pole position in qualifying, giving Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Ford their first pole of the season. However, the weather changed dramatically before the start. Heavy rain left the circuit almost undriveable, forcing a 40-minute delay. The race was eventually interrupted by red flags after several incidents and technical problems. Several cars powered by Ferrari engines lost power, prompting the FIA to introduce an urgent software update related to energy deployment.Following the restart, conditions changed rapidly. Intermediate tyres initially offered a significant advantage, but as the track dried, teams switched to slicks. Kimi Antonelli led for an extended period before Verstappen gradually moved into the lead. The Safety Car was deployed again after Alex Albon’s retirement, while George Russell was forced to stop with a power unit problem. Lando Norris also lost several positions after taking evasive action.
Verstappen controlled the closing stages to secure his first victory of the season. It was his 72nd career win with Red Bull, matching Michael Schumacher’s record of 72 victories with Ferrari.
Antonelli finished second, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium. The championship battle will continue next week with the night race in Singapore.
