Austria Debuts New Sprint Format

MotoGP Announces Changes to Sprint Race Procedure Starting from Austria

MotoGP management has announced upcoming changes to the sprint race format, set to take effect from the Austrian Grand Prix. As known, the sprint format was introduced to the championship in 2023, offering riders an opportunity to earn an additional 12 points.

These short-distance sprint races follow the same regulations as the main race.

Beginning with Round 13 of the 2025 season the Austrian Grand Prix the Grand Prix Commission has decided to implement a new regulation regarding the grid procedure for sprint races.

Specifically, the time allotted for teams on the starting grid will be increased from 15 to 20 minutes. During this extended period, teams will have the opportunity to make final adjustments to the motorcycles or perform tyre changes.

An official statement explained: "In order to give teams sufficient time to make setup adjustments or tyre changes on the grid, the duration of the MotoGP sprint start procedure has been extended to 20 minutes."

All other aspects of the sprint start procedure will remain unchanged.
