Born to Race:Montoya Jr. Follows the Legacy
Sebastian Montoya made his Formula 2 debut this year and has already drawn attention, having reached the podium twice.Despite the weight of a well-known surname which often brings added pressure Sebastian insists that his father is a source of inspiration and a role model rather than a burden.
Born in 2005, he has no personal memories of his father’s time in Formula 1,as Juan Pablo Montoya left the series in 2006. However, Sebastian recalls photos and videos, including one from Brazil in 2005, when he was placed inside the trophy his father had just won. Among the standout memories for him are Juan Pablo’s victories in Silverstone, Monza, and Monaco, as well as his famous overtake on Michael Schumacher at the 2001 Brazilian Grand Prix.
This year, Sebastian celebrated his first Formula 2 podium finish in Monaco a particularly meaningful moment, given his admiration for the circuit and his father's past success there. Although he always felt he had strong pace at the track, the results had not previously reflected that potential.
His father has had a significant influence on his racing career. While the Montoya name attracts more attention, Sebastian views it as an advantage.Juan Pablo now coaches and supports his son, and Sebastián believes he has inherited some of his father’s fearlessness and racing instincts.
For Sebastian, success is about making the most of the tools available working effectively with engineers, fine-tuning the car, and staying focused regardless of the competition. His father’s achievements continue to motivate and inspire him as he builds his own path in motorsport.
