Colton Herta:Leaving Indy Behind?

According to recent reports, the Cadillac F1 Team is set to announce its driver lineup for the 2026 Formula 1 season as early as next week. Among the names strongly linked to the new American outfit are two well-known and experienced drivers: Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Both have previously achieved significant results in Formula 1, including multiple podium finishes and runner-up positions in the World Championship standings. Their inclusion would bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the team as it prepares for its highly anticipated debut in the sport.

Alongside these familiar names, growing attention is being directed at American driver Colton Herta. Despite not currently competing in Formula 1,Herta remains a prominent figure in American motorsport through his participation in the IndyCar Series with Andretti Global. However, 2025 has proven to be a challenging season for the 25-year-old. Although he managed to score one podium finish,he has not secured a single race win. With only two rounds left in the current IndyCar season, Herta sits eighth in the championship standings an insufficient position to meet the points requirement for an FIA Super Licence, which is mandatory to compete in Formula 1.

Despite these setbacks, Herta is still widely considered one of the most promising American drivers of his generation. His raw pace, racing instincts, and technical feedback have earned him respect in the paddock and the media. There are even rumors suggesting that he may consider switching to the FIA Formula 2 Championship next season in order to gain more international exposure and potentially accumulate enough Super Licence points for a future F1 opportunity. While Herta has not confirmed nor denied these reports directly, he has remained relatively quiet on the matter, opting not to make any formal statements at this time.

According to IndyStar, Colton Herta is currently under a long-term contract with Andretti Global, a team with which he has built his career. The same source reports that Herta earns between $5 and $10 million annually through his involvement in IndyCar figures that reflect his value within the American motorsport scene. If a move to Formula 1 or a European-based series is on the horizon, it would likely require extensive negotiations between all parties involved.

For now, the motorsport world waits to see whether Herta’s name will indeed appear alongside Perez and Bottas in Cadillac’s long-awaited driver lineup announcement.
