FIA Members Vote to End Presidential Term Restrictions

The FIA General Assembly in Macau has approved a proposal from FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to eliminate the restriction on the number of presidential terms, following a vote by the federation's member automobile clubs.According to BBC Sport, 90.71% of voters supported the amendment to the federation's statutes, although the FIA had not yet officially confirmed the final voting figures at the time of publication.

The decision will allow the 64-year-old Ben Sulayem to stand for re-election as FIA President an unlimited number of times, as the previous restriction of three four-year terms will no longer apply.

The FIA currently maintains an upper age limit of 70 for presidential candidates. However, according to sources familiar with the matter, Ben Sulayem is also expected to seek the removal of this restriction. Reports suggest that the FIA President aims to eliminate all remaining barriers that could prevent him from continuing to lead the federation in the long term.
