George Russell Drives Historic Record Attempt
“A historic achievement! I am proud to have participated in the project where the Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept car covered 40,000 kilometers in less than 8 days equivalent to circling the globe,” wrote George Russell on social media.
The Mercedes driver spoke about the record-breaking run of the new electric vehicle, which set more than 20 world records, including a daily distance record of 5,479 kilometers in 24 hours.During his shift, he maintained speeds of 300 km/h, with battery charging stops lasting approximately one minute. He congratulated the team on this remarkable success.
The record attempt lasted eight days and took place at the Nardo Ring circuit in Italy, which has a lap length of 12.5 kilometers. A team of 17 drivers covered 40,000 kilometers in 7 days and 13 hours.
It is reminiscent of Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days but much faster.
The work was organized into three shifts of eight hours each, with five drivers per shift. Over 100 engineers from Mercedes-AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach and the Formula 1 motor division in Brixworth oversaw the operation.
The electric vehicle delivers 1,341 horsepower,with battery development involving the Formula 1 motor division.
“These records were made possible by exceptional efficiency and ultra-fast battery charging. This means that future owners of our electric vehicles will benefit from genuine AMG technology,” stated Michael Shihbe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG.
The GT XX concept is not a production model, but a four-door Mercedes-AMG GT coupe, incorporating technologies proven during these record attempts, is scheduled for release at the end of 2026.
