Lando Norris Reflects on Hungarian Grand Prix Victory After Dramatic Opening Lap

Lando Norris claimed victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, securing his first win of the season and returning to the top step of the podium. For the McLaren driver, it was the 12th victory of his Formula 1 career and his first since becoming World Champion. The race did not begin ideally for the Briton. On the opening lap, he made a mistake that allowed his teammate, Oscar Piastri, to move ahead. However, the Australian's race later came to an early end due to a gearbox failure, while Norris capitalised on the situation by delivering impressive pace and a flawless performance throughout the remainder of the race. After the chequered flag, Norris admitted that the opening laps had made him seriously doubt his chances of winning. "I still can't fully explain what happened on the opening lap. I suddenly lost the rear of the car at Turn 2 and only just managed to keep it under control. I had several similar moments throughout the race, so it certainly wasn't an easy car to drive. When Oscar got ahead of me, I honestly thought my chances of victory had disappeared. From that point on, I committed to pushing as hard as I possibly could. I focused on maintaining a strong pace and taking every opportunity to reduce the gap. I believe today was one of the strongest races I've ever driven in terms of outright pace. The car allowed me to attack almost every corner with confidence, and I felt completely comfortable behind the wheel." Norris also highlighted the crucial role played by McLaren's strategy and tyre management. "Everything came together perfectly today. We managed tyre degradation really well and were able to extend our stints without sacrificing performance. That gave us greater strategic flexibility. Before the race, I didn't expect our pace to be this strong, which makes it even more satisfying to have converted it into a victory."
