Madrid GP:Norris Secures Pole in Dramatic Qualifying Finale

The Madrid Grand Prix weekend delivered the difficult conditions many had anticipated, with heavy tyre degradation, several incidents and limited overtaking putting even greater emphasis on qualifying performance.Mercedes set the pace during practice, with George Russell fastest in FP1 before Kimi Antonelli topped both FP2 and FP3. However, the sessions were interrupted by a number of crashes. Arvid Lindblad suffered a heavy accident in FP2, while Lewis Hamilton and Oliver Bearman were involved in separate incidents during final practice. Bearman’s Haas sustained too much damage to be repaired in time for qualifying.Ferrari and Max Verstappen started Q1 on the Medium compound, while most of the field opted for Soft tyres. Liam Lawson initially set the pace, but the battle remained extremely close throughout the session.Verstappen then produced the fastest lap in Q2 with a 1:32.431 to lead the field into the final segment. Several drivers, including Nico Hulkenberg, Gabriel Bortoleto, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly, Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon, failed to make the cut.The fight for pole intensified in Q3, with Lewis Hamilton briefly moving to the top of the timing sheets before Antonelli took over. With the final laps underway, Lando Norris found the decisive improvement.The McLaren driver posted a 1:31.824 to claim pole position for the Madrid Grand Prix, securing his third pole of the 2026 season and the 19th of his Formula 1 career.Norris will start Sunday’s race from the front row alongside the championship leader. Verstappen and Hamilton will line up on the second row, while Charles Leclerc and George Russell complete the third row.
