Max Verstappen Explains Red Bull’s Pace Struggles at 2026 US Grand Prix

Max Verstappen secured third place at the United States Grand Prix, claiming another podium finish following a challenging race at the Circuit of the Americas. Despite the positive result, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion admitted that Red Bull Racing lacked the necessary pace to challenge for victory. His teammate, Isack Hadjar, started from third on the grid but lost positions during the race and eventually finished sixth.Following two consecutive race weekends in which Red Bull demonstrated strong competitiveness, the team arrived in Austin hoping to maintain its recent momentum. However, the characteristics of the American circuit and difficulties with tyre performance presented additional challenges. Verstappen explained that the car lacked overall performance, while the available tyre compounds prevented the team from fully maximising its potential.

"We simply didn't have enough pace throughout the race, and the available tyre compounds weren't particularly well suited to the conditions here. We need to analyse everything with the team and understand why we struggled. The car performed very well during the previous two races, but for some reason, we couldn't achieve the same level of performance at this circuit."

Despite these difficulties, the Dutch driver made the most of the opportunities presented by race strategy and battles between his rivals. During the closing stages, Verstappen became involved in an intense contest with Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc. One of the decisive moments came on Lap 47, when Verstappen overtook Norris in the battle for second place. Recognising that hesitation could leave him vulnerable to an attack, the Red Bull driver made an aggressive move to gain the position. However, Leclerc subsequently passed Verstappen to take second place.Reflecting on his battle with Norris, Verstappen explained that the situation required an immediate decision.A late Virtual Safety Car period was introduced after Valtteri Bottas stopped on track due to a technical issue. Verstappen acknowledged that the interruption may have worked in his favour, helping him maintain third place until the chequered flag.

"Of course, it's always good to finish on the podium after such a difficult weekend. Perhaps the Virtual Safety Car towards the end worked in my favour, but I'm certainly happy with the result," Verstappen added.Ultimately, third place in Austin represented a valuable result for Verstappen on a weekend when Red Bull struggled to match the pace of its closest competitors. Nevertheless, the race highlighted the importance of understanding why the car's competitiveness varied so significantly between circuits.

The Formula 1 championship continues next weekend in Mexico City, where Red Bull Racing will aim to rediscover its stronger form and return to contention for victory.
