Mercedes Plays Down Verstappen Rumors,Sticks with Core Duo

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team Principal Toto Wolff has recently outlined the team's current priorities regarding its driver line-up for the upcoming seasons. In an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF, Wolff confirmed the team's intention to extend contracts with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 season, while also acknowledging that Max Verstappen remains a figure of interest.

"Our priority is to continue working with George and Kimi. At this stage, that is our main focus. However, when a driver of Max’s calibre is involved, it is only natural to be interested in his future plans," Wolff stated.

As of the mid-point of the current season, Max Verstappen sits third in the Drivers’ Championship standings, trailing leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren by 69 points, while maintaining an 18-point advantage over George Russell, who occupies fourth place.Speculation recently arose on social media suggesting that Wolff and Verstappen had been seen together on the island of Sardinia. Addressing the rumors, Wolff offered the following clarification:

"Being on holiday in close proximity does not imply discussions or cooperation in Formula 1. We have always enjoyed a respectful relationship, and it is not unusual for us to vacation in similar locations."
