Mercedes Unveils W17:A Revolution in Formula 1

Mercedes has unveiled its new W17 E PERFORMANCE car without a large-scale show: the livery was revealed during private tests in Barcelona, while full technical details were disclosed ahead of the Bahrain test sessions. The presentation was conducted through pre-recorded interviews, with Team Principal Toto Wolff speaking first.

“The W17 is more compact, agile, and dynamic,” he stated. “During testing, we focused on the reliability of the car, the integration of the chassis with the new hybrid power unit, and optimizing its setup. The new regulations will add greater strategic depth the races will be like chess at high speed.”

The driver lineup remains unchanged: George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, and third driver Frederik Vesti all graduates of Mercedes’ junior program. “George is a reliable leader, Kimi combines talent and courage, and Frederik provides support on the simulator,” Wolff added.

At the heart of the W17 is a new hybrid power unit with a 50:50 balance between internal combustion and electric power. The MGU-K now delivers 350 kW, the car uses PETRONAS sustainable fuel, and integration with the aerodynamics and cooling systems enhances on-track efficiency.

“This car represents a revolution, not an evolution,” emphasized HPP Managing Director Hywel Thomas. Technical Director James Allison added that nearly all components chassis, aerodynamics, and electronics have been redesigned to create a competitive car.

Testing has confirmed the reliability of the W17. Russell noted that the car is lighter and more powerful, Antonelli is ready to unlock its full potential, and Vesti highlighted the importance of simulator work in preparation. The W17 is ready for the 2026 season compact, powerful, and fully aligned with Formula 1’s new era.
