Red Bull Pahlavan:Strength Takes Over the Historic Streets of Icherisheher
On the morning of July 26, Icherisheher awoke to an entirely different rhythm. The echoes of determined footsteps rang through its historic stone streets, bringing new energy to the ancient city. Cheers filled the air within the fortress walls as participants pushed toward the next obstacle, with every turn making the challenge even more demanding. The inaugural Red Bull Pahlavan transformed the Old City into a one-day arena of strength, agility, and determination.Along the route, speed was only the beginning. Reaching the finish required carefully managing energy, maintaining control over every movement, and continuing forward despite mounting fatigue. In reality, the competition had begun long before race day. More than 500 applications were submitted to participate. Of those, 250 competitors confirmed their participation, and 158 athletes ultimately lined up at the starting line on July 26 to test their strength on the historic streets of Icherisheher. As soon as the starting signal sounded, the main battle began: who could preserve their strength until the very end and cross the finish line first? Every Step Came at a Cost The 1.7-kilometre course featured five obstacles and five functional workout stations. A single misstep on the balance beam could cost valuable seconds. The suspended ladder, climbing net, and barriers tested not only agility but also precision of movement. Carrying heavy weights and performing medicine ball squats demanded not only physical strength but also mental resilience. There was no simple formula for victory. While speed was important, success depended equally on managing energy efficiently, minimizing time lost at obstacles, and remaining composed in the intense July heat. The high-energy atmosphere of the race was further enriched by Azerbaijan's traditional pahlavan culture. Special performances by the AMINA-AZIF pahlavans captivated spectators and drew enthusiastic applause throughout the event. The competition brought together two different eras in one unique setting: the centuries-old tradition of pahlavan strength and the relentless pace of modern obstacle racing. The fastest competitors to complete the course earned their place on the podium. Women's Podium Anna Yusupova Leyla Mammadova Liliya Smirnova Men's Podium Najmaddin Zaliyev Guloghlan Asadzade Farid Zeynalli Prominent figures from the OCR, judo, and traditional sports communities, together with representatives of partner organizations, gathered to congratulate the winners. Pahlavan is more than lifting heavy weights or overcoming obstacles. It is about maintaining your rhythm when your breathing becomes difficult, taking the next step when your legs are exhausted, and seeing every wall ahead not as an obstacle, but as part of the journey. Red Bull Pahlavan was organized with the support of the Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration. The Azerbaijan National Sports Association and the AMINA-AZIF team added a distinctive cultural dimension to the event through performances showcasing Azerbaijan's traditional sporting heritage.
