Russell Wins Thrilling Shanghai Sprint

The Saturday sprint in Shanghai International Circuit was the earliest session of the race weekend, although the main events of the round qualifying and the Grand Prix will take place later. For the third consecutive year, the Chinese round is being held in the sprint format.

On Friday, the Mercedes drivers appeared to have the upper hand. George Russell set the fastest time in the sole practice session and won sprint qualifying, while his teammate Kimi Antonelli finished second on both occasions.

At the start of the race, Lewis Hamilton moved into the lead after gaining several positions, but he was soon challenged by Russell in the battle for the lead. On lap six, Russell overtook Hamilton and gradually built a gap. Charles Leclercremained close behind and later passed Hamilton.

The sprint was briefly neutralised by a safety car period, after which the race resumed with a restart. In the closing stages, Russell confidently maintained his lead to secure victory in the sprint. Leclerc finished second, six-tenths behind the winner, while Hamilton completed the podium in third place.
