South Korea Eyes Formula 1 Comeback

In South Korea, discussions have resumed regarding the potential return of a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with 2028 being considered as a possible target date. Authorities in Incheon have confirmed that negotiations are underway and that a proposal for a new urban circuit, approximately five kilometers in length, has been presented.

Previously, the Grand Prix was held at the Yeongam circuit from 2010 to 2013; however, it was discontinued due to high operational costs and limited spectator interest. Organizers now believe that conditions have improved and aim to attract up to 400,000 attendees over a race weekend by combining the event with cultural programming, including K-pop entertainment.

The circuit design is being developed by the firm founded by Hermann Tilke, currently led by his son, Carsten Tilke. Nevertheless, the final decision will depend on approval from the national government, the securing of private investment, and reaching an agreement with Formula 1 management, particularly given the already crowded race calendar.
