Valtteri Bottas Chooses an Unusual Route from Malaysia to Singapore

Formula 1 drivers usually rely on private jets, cars or other conventional forms of transport when travelling between Grand Prix venues. Valtteri Bottas, however, has opted for a very different approach, choosing to make the journey from Malaysia to Singapore by bicycle. The Cadillac driver has set himself a challenge of roughly 350 kilometres, continuing his journey after an early retirement from the Malaysian Grand Prix. Bottas’ race at Sepang came to an abrupt end on the seventh lap, when his car went off the circuit and became stranded in the gravel, forcing him to retire from the race.Rather than allowing the disappointing result to end his day, Bottas soon turned his attention to cycling. He began his journey shortly after the race, using the bicycle to cover the first part of his route towards Singapore. His opening stint covered almost 57 kilometres and took 2 hours and 8 minutes. Bottas travelled from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport area towards Port Dickson, making a significant start to what is expected to be a much longer journey.Long-distance cycling is nothing new for the Finnish driver. Bottas is an experienced cyclist and has previously taken part in international cycling events, as well as completing demanding rides in different parts of the world. Cycling also forms part of his physical training away from the Formula 1 circuit. This latest ride, however, has a different purpose. Rather than simply completing a training session, Bottas is using his bicycle to travel between two Grand Prix destinations. His decision adds an unusual twist to the transition from one race weekend to the next.Covering hundreds of kilometres by bicycle would be a demanding undertaking for any athlete, particularly immediately after a Formula 1 race. Bottas’ experience and fitness should help him deal with the challenge, but the distance still makes the journey an impressive test of endurance. While his early retirement in Malaysia prevented him from making an impact on the track, Bottas has certainly attracted attention away from it. His decision to cycle towards Singapore offers a striking contrast to the usual high-speed travel associated with Formula 1 and once again highlights his passion for cycling. For a driver accustomed to moving rapidly from one circuit to another throughout the season, Bottas has chosen to slow things down considerably — while still turning the journey itself into a sporting challenge.
