FIA Extends Formula 1 Power Unit Component Limits Through 2028

The FIA has revised the Formula 1 Technical Regulations, extending the increased power unit component allocation through the end of the 2028 season. The relaxed limits had originally been introduced only for 2026, the first year of Formula 1's new power unit era. Under the updated regulations, each driver will be allowed to use four internal combustion engines, four turbochargers, four exhaust systems, along with three MGU-K units, three energy stores, and three control electronics units per season. According to GPBlog, the extension reflects the late finalisation of the 2026 power unit regulations, which reduced the time available for manufacturers to develop their new power units and increased the likelihood of early reliability concerns. By maintaining the higher component allocation for the first three seasons of the new regulations, the FIA aims to provide manufacturers—particularly new power unit suppliers—with greater operational flexibility while addressing potential reliability issues.
