Antonelli’s Historic First Win

The round in Shanghai International Circuit concluded the opening two-race sequence of the season. On the morning of race day, it was announced that the Grands Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia had been cancelled due to tensions in the region. As a result, the Asian leg of the calendar has been reduced to three events, and a lengthy break will follow the race in Suzuka Circuit.

The Chinese weekend was held in the sprint format. Throughout practice and the sprint sessions, the Mercedes drivers appeared to have the advantage. In the main qualifying session, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli secured pole position, becoming the youngest pole-sitter in the history of Formula One. He shared the front row with his teammate George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc started from the second row.

The race began with an intense start, as Hamilton initially moved into the lead before Antonelli soon regained the position. After a safety car period, the battle intensified, but the pace of the Mercedes allowed Antonelli to gradually build a gap. Behind him, a close fight unfolded between Hamilton, Leclerc, and Russell.

Antonelli ultimately maintained his advantage to claim the first victory of his career, becoming the second-youngest race winner in Formula One history. Russell finished second to secure a Mercedes one-two finish, while Hamilton crossed the line in third, achieving his first podium with Ferrari. Carlos Sainz Jr. scored the first points of the season for Williams.

The championship will continue in two weeks’ time at Suzuka.
