Big Changes Ahead:Formula 1 Considers Weekend Format Revolution
On the eve of the Italian Grand Prix, Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali outlined potential changes to the format of race weekends. Among the ideas under consideration are the removal of Friday practice sessions, a reduction in race distances, and the introduction of a reverse starting grid.
“We are evaluating the future of the format, with particular focus on sprint weekends. The key question is whether we should expand their number and, if so, how best to do it. Promoters and fans are in favor of this concept, and an increasing number of drivers are supportive as well. Even those who were initially opposed have now changed their view,” Domenicali stated.
According to him, traditional free practice sessions are of interest only to a narrow circle of specialists, whereas the audience is seeking more on-track action. “Our surveys show that spectators want to see exciting competition, not long practice runs. The younger generation often prefers highlights and key moments, and we must take this demand into account.”
Domenicali also emphasized that Formula 1 will soon revisit the discussion of a reverse grid. “Previously, everyone was against it, but now more and more voices are in favor. This requires courage, but such ideas cannot be ignored,” he concluded.
