Cadillac Could Fuel Mick’s Return
Cadillac F1 Keeps Drivers Guessing as Schumacher Emerges as Contender
British publication The Race has succinctly captured Cadillac F1’s current approach: General Motors’ Formula 1 project is keeping multiple drivers on edge by postponing the announcement of its debut-season lineup.
While Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas remain the frontrunners for a race seat, 26-year-old Mick Schumacher has also emerged as a serious candidate.
The German driver, who contested 43 Grands Prix with Haas, is currently racing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), where he has claimed three podium finishes with the No. 36 crew. At the same time,Schumacher and his management continue to push for a return to Formula 1.
According to The Race, such a return is indeed possible though most likely in the role of reserve driver for Cadillac F1. Schumacher previously held a similar position at Mercedes in 2023 and 2024 and could realistically combine that role with his WEC commitments.
In endurance racing, Schumacher is expected to transition from Alpine to Cadillac Team Jota, where he could replace Jenson Button the 2009 F1 World Champion is reportedly set to retire at the end of the current season. The move would benefit both parties: Cadillac would gain a driver with F1 experience and technical insight from Mercedes, while Schumacher would stay connected to the F1 paddock without stepping away from active competition.
Considering Cadillac’s rising competitiveness in WEC highlighted by a pole position and victory in Brazil such a dual program could be an ideal next step for Schumacher.
