Chaos in Baku:Six Red Flags, Verstappen Leads the Grid
The 2025 Formula 1 qualifying session in Baku proved to be highly eventful and unpredictable. The main factors influencing the session were challenging weather conditions, a series of accidents, and the complex choice of tires. Pirelli brought the C4–C6 compounds to the event, with the debuting C6 proving to be unstable and effective only within a narrow operating window, creating additional challenges for both teams and drivers.
The session was interrupted by red flags six times collisions involved Nico Hulkenberg, Alex Albon, Kimi Antonelli, Franco Colapinto, and Oscar Piastri, while Charles Leclerc again damaged his car during the final stage of qualifying. Many drivers were unable to complete a clean lap, further complicating the fight for optimal starting positions.
In the final attempt, Max Verstappen set the fastest time 1:41.117 securing the 46th pole position of his career and his sixth of the season, confirming Red Bull’s strong pace on the Baku circuit. Carlos Sainz finished second, achieving his best result of the season and the best for Williams since the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.
The starting grid looks particularly intriguing and promises an intense race: Verstappen and Sainz will start from the front row, followed by Lawson and Antonelli on the second row, and Russell and Tsunoda on the third. This formation adds extra tension ahead of the race, and the changeable weather conditions could play a decisive role in team strategies and the race outcome.
