F2 Races Moves to North America
The cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix affected not only Formula 1 but also the junior championships. While no replacement could be found for Formula 3, Formula 2 will, for the first time, travel to North America to stage races in Miami and Montreal.
The head of the series, Bruno Michel, stated that his initial objective was to secure two replacement rounds, as traveling across the Atlantic for a single event would not have been economically viable. Discussions with the organizers in Miami began early; however, the preparation proved to be challenging, as the circuit was already committed to other series, and the required infrastructure had to be created virtually from scratch.
In contrast, the situation in Montreal was more straightforward, as there was an available slot in the schedule, with the primary concerns relating to financial aspects. In Miami, however, a wide range of logistical issues had to be addressed, including paddock placement, ensuring access for equipment, and coordinating operations with other series within a tight timetable.
The implementation of this plan required considerable effort from the organizers, the FIA, and Formula 1 management, including Stefano Domenicali. Ultimately, the revised calendar was approved, although the coordination process proved to be highly complex.
