FIA Cuts Energy Limit for Suzuka Qualifying

Ahead of the race weekend, the FIA,together with teams and manufacturers, clarified the qualifying format in Suzuka. Due to the limited number of heavy braking zones, the Japanese circuit is considered one of the most challenging for energy recovery. Even before the season, concerns were raised that drivers might be forced to excessively “save” energy and complete laps at reduced pace, which could negatively affect the spectacle.

Following the Japanese Grand Prix, discussions on potential regulatory changes will continue, with a focus on qualifying sessions, while a temporary measure has been introduced in the meantime.

The energy limit available for harvesting per lap in Suzuka has been reduced from 9 to 8 MJ, which will cut the use of “superclipping” mode to approximately four seconds per lap. The FIA emphasized that the decision was taken unanimously.

It is also noted that this adjustment reflects the position of drivers and teams, who believe it is important to preserve qualifying as a fully competitive session. The governing body added that the start of the 2026 season under the new regulations has been successful, and the measure forms part of the ongoing process of refining the rules in real conditions.
