FIA Eyes 2027 Downforce Reduction
The FIA, in collaboration with Formula 1 teams, is set to discuss a potential reduction in car downforce from 2027, aimed at improving energy management and enhancing the efficiency of power unit systems.
An evaluation of the opening races of the season has revealed that the new-generation cars are negotiating corners faster than anticipated, which has had a negative impact on energy recovery performance. Consequently, several options are being considered to reduce downforce by 20, 30, or 50 points through aerodynamic changes to the front wing, floor, and sidepod structures.
Such regulatory adjustments may be introduced with the agreement of the teams; however, the FIA retains the authority to implement them unilaterally should they be deemed necessary on safety grounds, particularly due to increased tyre stress levels.
In a separate development, the FIA is also reviewing a potential redesign of the “bib” element located at the front section of the floor on 2026-spec cars, as it could present a safety risk in certain collision scenarios.
