From 1993 to 2027:Kyalami Prepares for Formula 1’s Return

The Cabinet of South Africa has approved a proposal from the Department of Sport to submit an official bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix at Kyalami between 2027 and 2029. The project is fully backed by the necessary financial guarantees, provided by representatives of the country’s private sector. According to Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the initiative is not only fully supported by reputable investors but will also serve as a powerful driver for job creation and economic growth. He emphasized that the very opportunity for South Africa to compete for the right to host such a prestigious Grand Prix highlights the nation’s significant role on the global stage.

In June of this year, the Kyalami circuit was granted a Grade 1 license, allowing it to host rounds of the Formula 1 World Championship. At present, extensive construction work is underway at the venue, including the development of additional grandstands, race control facilities, and modern pit buildings.

It is worth recalling that the South African Grand Prix was last held at Kyalami in 1993. Since then, the project has been discussed on numerous occasions, but now, with confirmed financial backing and upgraded infrastructure, the likelihood of Formula 1’s return to South Africa has increased considerably.
