George Russell Set for F1 Grid Penalty as Mercedes Exceeds Power Unit Limit

Mercedes driver George Russell is set to take a grid penalty after exceeding the permitted seasonal allocation of power unit components, although the team has yet to determine at which Grand Prix the sanction will be applied.Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord confirmed that Russell’s team-mate Kimi Antonelli is also expected to face a similar penalty. The team will carefully select the most suitable races to introduce additional power unit components, balancing the need to maintain reliability with the potential impact on its championship points haul.Mercedes technical director James Allison explained that the condition of the power units will be assessed after every Grand Prix. Any decision to replace components will be based on their accumulated mileage, performance and overall reliability, with Mercedes aiming to minimise the competitive impact of the inevitable penalties.
