Hybrid V8s to Drive F1 Forward, Says Domenicali
Stefano Domenicali believes that Formula 1 must not shy away from innovation conservatism no longer serves the sport. He envisions the championship eventually transitioning to hybrid atmospheric V8 engines running on sustainable fuels a concept already under discussion and supported by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. After the regulatory cycle beginning in 2026, the expectation is that the current turbocharged V6 power units may be replaced by simpler alternatives an idea Domenicali initially proposed previously and one that now receives fan endorsement as well.
Domenicali also underscored the significance of advancing hybrid technology, stating that while the sport is headed toward next-generation engines, the immediate priority should be the development and refinement of the existing engine platform.
Additionally, he addressed the topic of component standardization such as gearboxes noting that the lap-time difference between them is minimal (a mere 0.001 seconds), while concerns over cost and reliability are considerably greater. Implementing uniform components that do not critically impact technology would allow the sport to focus on truly meaningful innovations. He suggested a similar approach could apply to battery systems, noting that some manufacturers still believe they can influence race outcomes.
Regarding hydrogen technologies, Domenicali was unequivocal: while hydrogen may be a valuable long-term prospect, it is not feasible within the next ten years due to complexity and pressing safety concerns. Introducing hydrogen into racing at present would be premature and unnecessarily risky.
