James Allison Praises 2026 Cars Before Launch
James Allison on F1’s 2026 Regulations:Less Downforce,Higher Speeds
In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes Technical Director James Allison shared insights into what to expect from Formula 1 cars under the upcoming 2026 regulations.According to Allison, the next-generation cars will feature a flat floor with a central step and reduced ground effect, resulting in lower levels of downforce. Additionally, the use of narrower tyres will decrease mechanical grip, although aerodynamic efficiency will improve across a wider range of ride heights and setup variations.
While cornering speeds are expected to decrease, top speeds will increase thanks to active aerodynamics and an enhanced hybrid power unit with the electric component alone delivering up to 475 hp, alongside an estimated 575 hp from the internal combustion engine. This will lead to unprecedented levels of torque and acceleration. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff confirmed that simulated top speeds approach 400 km/h.
Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich, who has tested the 2026 car concept in a simulator, described the acceleration as "like a rocket."
Allison believes the new cars will be more enjoyable and manageable to drive, with more consistent handling and balance through both slow and fast corners. His view is supported by James Vowles,Team Principal at Williams, who urged fans to trust the feedback from drivers who have spent considerable time testing the new generation in simulators.
Despite ongoing development and preparation for 2026, the final version of the technical regulations is still being refined by the FIA, in collaboration with teams, engineers, and drivers.
