Carlos Sainz to Represent Madrid GP
Construction Begins on New Madrid Circuit Ahead of 2026 F1 Debut
Construction has officially begun on the new Madrid circuit, which is set to join the Formula 1 calendar next season. Spanish driver Carlos Sainz was invited to the launch event and has been named an ambassador for the new venue by the Williams team.
As RaceBrief.com reports, starting from 2026, the Spanish Grand Prix will move from Barcelona to the nation's capital, Madrid. The circuit will be located around the IFEMA exhibition center and will feature a hybrid layout—part street circuit, part permanent track. The full length of the track will be 5.4 kilometers.
Speaking about the project, Carlos Sainz said: "I’m really looking forward to this project. People keep asking me about the circuit. It’s going to be more than just a race—it’ll also host concerts and events during the race weekend. In my opinion, Madrid could become one of the most exciting races on the calendar. We have 24 races, and countries like Mexico, Miami, and Las Vegas organize incredible events. I believe Madrid has the potential to match or even surpass them in terms of quality and excitement. The street section has tight walls, which will add intensity to the racing, while the permanent part of the circuit reminds me of traditional European tracks—something drivers truly enjoy."
