McLaren Presents the MCL40
The McLaren team has unveiled its new MCL40 car, with the presentation taking place on 9 February in Bahrain ahead of the official pre-season tests. This year, the car was introduced earlier than the previous season, despite a notably short winter break. During the January running in Barcelona, the team used a temporary livery.
The most significant change is the arrival of a new title sponsor, Mastercard, which has led to the team adopting the updated name McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team.
Zak Brown emphasized that the team is retaining its signature papaya-orange identity, while the design philosophy draws inspiration from last year’s championship-winning car. He noted that the MCL40 has been built almost entirely from the ground up, with a particular focus on aerodynamics and overall efficiency. According to him, the team’s stability should help McLaren enter the new technical era with confidence.
Andrea Stella remarked that the 2026 regulations will present a substantial challenge: the new framework will level the competitive field, and past achievements will no longer guarantee an advantage. He highlighted McLaren’s key strengths a strong driver line-up, a reliable Mercedes HPP power unit, and significant support from partners.
Chief Designer Rob Marshall explained that the car has been completely re-engineered: it is now shorter and lighter, features an integrated next-generation hybrid system, a redesigned floor, updated wings, and refined aerodynamics intended to facilitate overtaking. He acknowledged that balancing the development of a new car with the fight for last season’s title was particularly demanding.
The driver pairing remains unchanged Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are prepared to defend the championship. Norris stated that he is eagerly anticipating testing, while Piastri noted that the new hybrid system requires adaptation, as the car behaves very differently from its predecessor.
The presentation concluded with a striking fireworks display in McLaren’s traditional orange colours.
