Mercedes Team Shines in Melbourne

The Formula 1 season began in Melbourne against the backdrop of a new technical regulation, meaning teams only started to understand the true competitive order as the weekend unfolded. During winter testing, teams did not reveal their full pace, focusing instead on reliability and the integration of new systems.

At the start of the season, Aston Martin with Honda power units and the debuting Cadillac outfit appeared to face the greatest difficulties. Practice sessions were relatively calm, although discussion arose around the possible removal of one Straight Mode zone. Following protests from several teams, the decision was ultimately reconsidered.

In qualifying, Mercedes confirmed their strong pace. George Russell secured pole position, while Kimi Antonelli, despite a heavy crash in practice and a hastily rebuilt car, set the second-fastest time. One of the biggest surprises came in Q1, where reigning champion Max Verstappen crashed and was forced to start from 20th place. Ahead of the race, Oscar Piastri was also ruled out after crashing while exiting the pit lane.

At the start, Charles Leclerc seized the lead ahead of Russell, but the Mercedes driver later reclaimed the position during the race. Several Virtual Safety Car periods, caused by incidents and debris on track, significantly influenced team strategies.

In the end, Russell won the Australian Grand Prix, securing the sixth victory of his career. Antonelli finished second, delivering a one-two finish for Mercedes, while Leclerc completed the podium in third place.

Rookie Arvid Lindblad scored points in his debut race, and Gabriel Bortoleto earned the first points for Audi. The championship will continue next week with the Chinese Grand Prix, which will feature a sprint weekend format.
