New Sprint Format Under Discussion
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali has announced plans to discuss with teams and the FIA the potential expansion of the sprint race format, as well as possible changes to its structure including the introduction of a reverse-grid system, similar to those already used in Formula 2 and Formula 3.
“In my view, the time has come to seriously consider two key questions,” Domenicali said in an interview with The Race. “First: can sprint races be included at more events throughout the season? Second: should we explore the use of a reverse-grid format as part of a new race weekend structure? These are topics we plan to discuss with the teams, drivers, and, of course, the FIA.”
While proposals for reverse-grid races have previously faced resistance,Domenicali believes that attitudes within the paddock have become more open. He emphasized the importance of listening to fans, embracing innovation, and being unafraid to take risks even if that means making mistakes along the way.
“We’re not going back to the old weekend format,” he added. “Whatever the final structure may be, I believe sprint races should remain part of the championship. Currently, there are six sprints in a 24-race calendar. The ideal number may lie somewhere in between.”
