Russell Secures Austrian GP Pole as Verstappen Crashes
Qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring took place in hot conditions, with Mercedes emerging as the team to beat despite Red Bull introducing a significant upgrade package. Kimi Antonelli topped Friday's practice, while George Russell set the pace in the final practice session.
Antonelli was the fastest driver in Q1, as both Williams cars, along with the Aston Martin and Cadillac entries, were eliminated. The Mercedes rookie remained quickest in Q2, while Pierre Gasly, Gabriel Bortoleto, Oliver Bearman, Nico Hülkenberg, Esteban Ocon and Franco Colapinto all failed to progress to the final session.
Max Verstappen initially set the benchmark in Q3 before Antonelli moved ahead. In the decisive runs, Charles Leclerc briefly claimed provisional pole, only for Russell to deliver a lap of 1:06.113 to secure the fastest time. Verstappen crashed at Turn 9 during his final attempt, but the resulting yellow flags did not affect Russell's pole position.
The result marked Russell's 11th career pole position and his fourth of the 2026 Formula 1 season. He will share the front row with Leclerc, while Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli will start from the second row.
