Russell Tops Barcelona Qualifying

Qualifying in Barcelona once again underlined its crucial role in shaping the outcome of the race weekend, with track position traditionally carrying significant importance at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Pirelli added an extra strategic element by selecting a softer range of tyre compounds than those used at the venue last season.

Lewis Hamilton set the benchmark in Q1, while Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso were eliminated from further contention. George Russell emerged as the fastest driver in Q2, as Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz failed to advance to the final segment.

The decisive shootout for pole position was interrupted by red flags after Charles Leclerc crashed at Turn 4. Although the Ferrari driver was uninjured, the incident brought an early end to his qualifying campaign.

Following the restart, Russell reaffirmed Mercedes' strong pace by delivering a lap of 1:14.679 to secure pole position. Hamilton fell just 0.064 seconds short of his former team-mate's benchmark, completing a Mercedes front-row lockout. Kimi Antonelli claimed third place on the grid, with the top three drivers separated by less than three tenths of a second in an exceptionally close qualifying session.
