Senna’s First F1 Car Heads to Auction in Monaco
Sotheby’s will hold an auction in Monaco on April 26, where the Toleman TG183B Formula 1 car the machine in which Ayrton Senna made his Formula 1 debut in 1984 will be offered for sale.
Chassis no. 05, developed under the direction of Rory Byrne, was Senna’s first car. In his debut qualifying session, he outperformed his more experienced teammate, Johnny Cecotto; however, he retired from the race in Brazil due to a turbocharger failure. At the following round in South Africa, the Brazilian scored his first points, finishing sixth.
Over the course of the season, Senna scored points on two further occasions with this car before switching to the newer TG184. The car later became part of a private collection in the United States before returning to the United Kingdom, where it has since been used in filming and demonstration runs, including appearances by Martin Brundle and Pierre Gasly.
The car is currently in running condition, retains a number of original components, and is fitted with a restored Hart engine. It is expected to sell for between €2.8 million and €3.8 million, although the final price may exceed this estimate given the enduring interest in Senna’s legacy.
