Still Charging:Buemi Looks to Stay in Formula E
Sebastien Buemi: Veteran Racer Hints at Continued Future in Formula E
Sebastien Buemi is rightfully regarded as one of the most experienced and accomplished drivers of his generation. His impressive résumé includes 55 Formula 1 starts with Toro Rosso, four FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) titles, and 14 victories in Formula E — including the championship crown in 2016, achieved with the Renault factory team.
Now 36, the Swiss driver continues to compete at the highest level, successfully balancing his commitments in both WEC and Formula E. In recent weeks, speculation has emerged regarding a potential departure from the all-electric series. However,Buemi has hinted that he intends to stay, revealing that he has already reached a preliminary agreement with his current team, Envision, to extend his contract.
“Yes, I would say I’m staying in Formula E,” Buemi commented when asked about his plans for 2026. “It’s fortunate that the WEC and Formula E calendars no longer clash. If there were overlapping dates, it would be extremely difficult to manage both commitments.”
That said, uncertainty around future racing schedules remains a key obstacle to signing long-term agreements.
“We usually don’t receive the next season’s calendar until quite late — typically in May or June,” Buemi explained. “It is possible to sign a multi-year contract, but only if it includes specific clauses that allow for release in case of scheduling conflicts. For now, we’ll have to wait and see how things develop.”
Buemi also expressed his understanding of the teams’ position: “It’s hard to expect a team to commit to a driver who may not be able to participate in every round. That’s precisely why one-year deals tend to be the most realistic option.”
If the extension with Envision is finalized, the upcoming season will mark Buemi’s 12th in Formula E. Despite the passing years, the Swiss driver remains in strong form — in 2024, he claimed an impressive victory on the streets of Monaco and secured a podium finish in Indonesia, once again proving his competitiveness at the top level of motorsport.
