Suzuka’s New Surface Could Shake Up the Japanese Grand Prix

As is often the case in such situations, during the initial phase when racing resumes on newly laid asphalt, the track surface tends to offer limited grip. This may well be the scenario on 27 March, when the first practice sessions get underway at the Suzuka International Racing Course.

If weather conditions during the final weekend of March are favourable, the asphalt will gradually be rubbered in, leading to improved grip levels. However, the region is known for its unpredictable weather, and a wet weekend would present an additional challenge for both drivers and teams.

In the previous season, the Suzuka race was won by Max Verstappen for the fourth consecutive time. Lewis Hamilton also has four victories at the Japanese Grand Prix, although the seven-time World Champion last stood on the top step of the podium in Japan in 2018.

In addition, in 2026 Honda will mark its official return to the Formula 1 World Championship at its home circuit as the exclusive power unit supplier to the Aston Martin team.
