Twin Battles in Shanghai
Formula E: Shanghai Hosts Double-Header Weekend
The Shanghai International Circuit is hosting Rounds 10 and 11 of the Formula E World Championship this weekend. While the venue is well known for the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, Formula E uses a shortened layout of the circuit—3.051 km in length with 12 turns.
As a permanent racetrack, the layout is not ideally suited to the short-wheelbase Formula E cars. Nevertheless, similar venues are becoming increasingly common in the calendar, including rounds in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and China. Like Jeddah, Shanghai features a double-header format over the course of the weekend.
On Saturday, pole position was secured by Max Gunther (DS Penske)—his second of the season. Starting alongside him on the front row was 20-year-old Taylor Barnard (McLaren), who has already claimed four podium finishes this year. Reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein and Jaguar driver Nick Cassidy lined up third and fourth, both aiming to challenge the front-runners.
The race included a mandatory 30-second Pit Boost—introduced for the first time in 2025—allowing a 10% top-up of battery charge during a brief stop. This new rule added another layer of strategy to what is already one of motorsport’s most tactically complex series.
