10 Years, 20,000 Volunteers:The Story Behind the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Volunteer Programme

As the milestone tenth edition of the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix approaches, preparations are well underway for the volunteers who will form an integral part of the team behind one of the country’s largest international sporting events.

In 2026, approximately 2,000 volunteers will contribute to the organisation and delivery of the race weekend.

This year is also a landmark year for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Volunteer Programme. As Formula 1 prepares to celebrate its tenth race in Azerbaijan, the volunteer programme is also marking its tenth Grand Prix. Over the past decade, interest in joining the programme has grown significantly. While around 7,000 candidates registered in 2016, this year the number reached a record 49,000 — with this unprecedented figure achieved in just 72 hours.

Over the past ten years, more than 20,000 volunteers have taken part in the organisation of Formula 1 races in Baku. Although the majority of participants are traditionally young people, the programme brings together volunteers from different generations. The youngest volunteer to have participated in the programme was 16, while the oldest was 75.

A key role in the development of the programme is played by the Baku City Circuit (BCC) Academy, which has been operating since 2016. Its mission extends beyond preparing volunteers for their responsibilities during the race weekend, also focusing on their personal and professional development.

The training programme includes specialised sessions and practical exercises designed to equip volunteers with the skills required to work effectively in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Participants develop their teamwork and communication skills while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the organisation and delivery of a major international sporting event.

For many participants, the knowledge and experience gained through the programme serve as a foundation for their future professional development. For many years, one of Baku City Circuit’s key priorities has been to offer employment opportunities to the most successful former volunteers, who already have first-hand knowledge of the organisation’s structure and the operational processes involved in delivering major events.

Over the past decade, more than 400 young people who began their journey as volunteers have subsequently joined the Baku City Circuit team responsible for delivering its events. This practice continues to provide high-performing participants with an opportunity to transition from volunteering into professional careers.

The journey from 7,000 applications in 2016 to a record 49,000 applications in just 72 hours in 2026 clearly demonstrates both the remarkable growth of the programme and the increasing interest it continues to attract.

In this milestone year, approximately 2,000 selected volunteers will continue this ten-year legacy, becoming part of the team behind the tenth Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
